Five European cities (Vienna, Geneva, Barcelona, Paris and Dublin) have so far signified to join this year’s heroic call to run for the poorest of the poor. This European event will kick-off in Vienna, Austria on 18, on April 2009 the day before the actual run at the Vienna City Marathon. This will be a gathering of Gawad Kalinga (GK) advocates, workers, supporters & heroes from all-over Europe. The culmination will be in Dublin, Ireland on 26, October 2009 after passing through the cities of Geneva, Barcelona and Paris. Again the whole GK Family will converge on that day to celebrate the spirit of “Bayanihan” - being heroes to one another.

Gawad Kalinga (GK) translated in English means to “to give care”, and it is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but in the world. GK’s vision for the Philippines is a slum-free, squatter-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for every Filipino. In 2006, Gawad Kalinga (GK) was bestowed the Ramon Magsaysay Award, considered to be Asia’s counterpart of the Nobel Prize, for harnessing the faith and generosity of Filipinos the world over to confront poverty in their homeland and to provide every Filipino the dignity of a decent home and neighborhood. With the following concrete objectives we are therefore inviting everyone to be part of a committed response to eradicate poverty, an absolute hindrance to world peace.
• To raise awareness of Gawad Kalinga as a holistic template to poverty eradication.
• To live out Gawad Kalinga’s maxim of “less for self, more for others, enough for all”.
• To answer the cry of the world’s poorest of the poor
• To strengthen the solidarity amongst the volunteers, advocates & supporters of Gawad Kalinga – Europe.
• To promote a simple, healthy & active lifestyle.
• To build a Heroes Ran Europe GK Village!
Join us in whichever city of your choice, be it in Vienna, Geneva, Barcelona, Paris or Dublin. We hearten everyone in whatever capacity to be in solidarity with our heroes, running the extra mile to answer the cry of the world’s poor.
